Halloween Part 1: The Invitation

A Mysterious Message

Woodsville was a town steeped in legends, and no night held more weight than Halloween. Every year, people in this sleepy town decorated houses and held parties, but everyone avoided one particular legend—the cursed mansion in the Darkwood forest. Stories circulated every year about the house, a looming shadow on the town's edge, rumored to be haunted by restless spirits. It was said that anyone who dared to enter would be consumed by the darkness, never to return.

Late one October evening, four friends received a strange message on their phones. Each message read the same, “Come to the cursed house. Midnight on Halloween. It’s waiting for you.” At first, they brushed it off as a prank, likely from someone at school. But as the messages continued, curiosity got the best of them. By Halloween night, Jasper, Lena, Kade, and Mara had convinced themselves to go.

Jasper, always the fearless one, couldn’t resist the call of the unknown. Lena, an artistic soul with a fascination for the supernatural, had her doubts but was intrigued. Kade, the joker, dismissed it as a setup for a laugh. And Mara, shy and cautious, reluctantly agreed, swayed by her friends’ enthusiasm. They agreed to meet at eleven, each in their costumes, to head to the house together.

Setting Out to Darkwood

Under the silver glow of the full moon, the four friends gathered at the edge of the forest. Jasper wore a vampire costume with a black cloak that billowed in the chilly October breeze. Lena, in a ghostly, pale dress, carried her camera, prepared to capture every eerie moment. Kade had dressed as a mad scientist, complete with disheveled hair and fake blood on his coat, while Mara looked like a classic witch, her black hat tilting in the wind.

Together, they set off on the narrow trail leading into Darkwood. The night was unusually quiet, only the soft rustling of leaves underfoot and the occasional distant hoot of an owl breaking the silence. The deeper they went, the more the temperature seemed to drop. The trees closed in around them, casting long shadows that danced in the moonlight. Despite their brave faces, each of them felt a growing sense of dread.

The House in the Distance

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, they spotted the mansion through the trees. Its tall, shadowed outline loomed over them, its worn-down facade looking like it hadn’t been touched in decades. The windows were cracked, and the wooden porch sagged, creaking under the weight of the unknown. Yet, the door was slightly ajar, as if waiting for them.

Kade, his voice slightly shaky, tried to lighten the mood. “Well, looks like someone forgot to lock up,” he joked, though no one laughed. Jasper took the lead, stepping onto the porch and peering inside. The air was stale, carrying a faint scent of decay and something else—something that made the hair on the back of their necks stand up. Taking a deep breath, Jasper nudged the door open, and with a loud creak, it swung wider.

He looked back at the others, grinning. “Come on, you’re not backing out now, are you?” Without another word, they followed him inside, stepping into the darkness of the cursed house, oblivious to the terror waiting within.
